Memphis, TN
Well, this may be one of the most disappointing blog posts that I have ever composed. I was really excited for Memphis. We were both really excited for Memphis. The history, the culture, the food…everything that we love when we travel. And this place…it used to have it. It still tries to have it. It doesn’t have it. Maybe it was the weather, as it was dreary rainy, but we have encountered that in plenty of places, plenty of time, and it has never detracted from the trip.
The city is down to a solitary cross-street (that is closed to cars, so it is easy to navigate), Beale St. and B.B. King Blvd., that displays all of the iconic images that come to mind when you picture Memphis. Unfortunately, most of the city is vacant buildings, even in the midst of downtown. It is easily explored in an afternoon, to include walking along the waterfront and enjoying the river boats along the Mississippi River.
So, yes, we stopped here. It was fine. We were overall disappointed. I would recommend that you choose somewhere other to visit, if you are thinking about it. That being said, we did have BBQ at Central BBQ twice (dinner the night before, and lunch the day after) before leaving…trying EVERYTHING that they had to offer: pork, brisket, chicken, and ribs (both wet and dry). This was our saving grace for this city, as it was awesome!
